Below are parallel calendars for CE April 26-34. Biblical scholars agree that the ministry of Jesus of Nazareth fell within that period of time. Some argue for a 2 1/2 year ministry and others a 3 1/2 year ministry and there is a range of dates for the Crucifixion. In general scholars use the Julian Calendar to report dates in this period but some do opt for the Gregorian Calendar. Hence, when encountering a date in the Roman system one has to discern whether or not it is expressed as a Julian or Gregorian date. There are some computer software programs that can help you work with dates in this nine year period. We have found the links below helpful.

  • The U.S. Naval Observatory provides a web-based utility to convert from calendar date and time to Julian date, and vice versa. You may not like to work with Universal Time which limits this utility for bible study purposes. Nevertheless, this utility is handy to verify a day of the week. See USNO Utility

  • The web-based Observed Calendar Program, on biblestudy.org provides, in our understanding, accurate dates for the Hebrew holydays from 256 CE to the present day using the rules of the Calculated Hebrew Calendar as stated by Hillel. It uses leap or embolismic years 3, 6, 8, 11,14, 17, 19 in a 19 year cycle. It is inaccurate, however, for all dates before 256  CE. In this utility the date of Pentecost is set following the priestly practice of counting 50 days beginning with a Sunday rather than the Pharisaic practice of counting beginning with the day after the first annual Sabbath. Pentecost must always fall on the first day of the week (sunset Saturday night to sunset Sunday night). The Pharisees, counting beginning with Nisan 16, fixed Sivan 6 as their Pentecost date. Rabbinic Judaism adopted this practice from their Pharisee progenitors.

  • Perhaps the most useful utility for converting dates from one calendar to another is a web-based program published by calendarhome.com. It does not provide the day of the week which means you will need to use the USNO Utility in combination with it. Again, in our understanding, this utility only provides accurate dates for the Hebrew Sabbaths and holydays from 256 CE to the present day based on the rules of the Calculated Hebrew Calendar as stated by Hillel with the exception of Pentecost as stated above.

  • Critical to developing a working knowledge of the Hebrew calendar as practiced in Herodian times is using astronomy software that allows you to simulate observation of celestial phenomena from Jerusalem. We recommend the world's leading brand of astronomy software, REDSHIFT™ 5. The RedShift desktop planetarium CD-ROM, is the world's best selling astronomy title and it will help you with dating eclipses, new moon, and equinoxes. Realize that this and all other such software is based upon mathematical models and provides only approximations of the actual physical phenomena.

  • You can find numerous calendar programs on the web. Beware, however, they come with assumptions. One program we examined assumed Joshua's log day was longer than a normal twenty-four hours. The programmers therefore adjusted, we believe incorrectly, the mathematics accordingly.

  • You can learn more of the Hebrew Calendar in The Comprehensive Hebrew Calendar by Arthur Spier (Spier: 1986). In The Hebrew Calendar: A Mathematical Introduction, by John A. Kossey, 142 CE is given as the year the New Cycle began. You can manually, by doing the mathematics, determine Hebrew Calendar dates for the Old cycle and New Cycle by selecting the appropriate  embolismic year pattern at 256 or if you prefer 142. We believe the latter is incorrect and opt for 256 CE.

With these tools you can easily convert from one calendar to another. There does remain, however, other important issues.

First, we stated that the Hillel II Hebrew Calendar is accurate from 256 CE to the present. What about dates before 256? Hoeh argues that before CE 256 the years in a cycle that were leap (embolismic) years were: 2, 5, 7, 10, 13, 16, 18 (see CE 22-40 Old Cycle). In the New Cycle the embolismic years in the nineteen year cycle are:  3, 6, 8, 11,14, 17, 19. Hoeh holds that an adjustment was made in the embolismic year-cycle effective with 256 CE to prevent Pentecost from occurring in the summer. We adhere to this understanding.

Second, some argue that a calculated calendar was not used in Herodian times. They opt for a calendar based on observation. The literature suggests that this was a position held by the Pharisees as they grappled for power with the priests. Calendar control was a major factor in the struggle for supremacy in the leadership of first century Judaism. In its simplest form this calendar began with the new moon following the Vernal Equinox. Below we have set forth this calendar, which we labeled the Observed Calendar in the table below, based on the New Moon when it occurred astronomically not when it was first observed. As a result, the month could have started on the day of astronomical new moon, the observed new moon, or if weather prevented a sighting a day or so after the new moon became visible in a clear sky.

Third, the matter becomes more complicated when one also introduces the argument of the Karaites who hold that determination of the beginning of the month should not only we from observation but also must take into the account of the readiness of the barley crop for harvest (see Karaite Calendar). The barley needed for the wave sheaf offering would have to be produced naturally to be a valid offering. The Karaites would postpone the beginning of the first month until the following new moon if the barley was not ready. So then, below recognize that the Biblical Calendar could vary from historical reality by a day or more or even a full month. As the climate of the Levant was more semitropical in the Herodias period, it is highly unlikely that there were actually any monthly postponements in Jesus' day. By the ninth century, when the Karate movement began, climate had shifted and they had reason to argue for such postponements.

Below for the years 26-34 CE we provide the Gregorian Calendar and the Julian Calendar (both solar calendars), the Observed Calendar (a luni-solar calculated calendar sometimes called the Biblical Calendar, Karate Calendar, or rarely the Sacred Calendar), the luni-solar calculated Hebrew Calendar for both the New Cycle and the Old Cycle, and the Essene Calendar (a solar calendar).

There are other determinations not included here such as the Parker & Dubberstein's Babylonian Chronology 626 B.C.-A.D. 75 (Parker and Dubberstein 1942) used by many to determine the calendar used by the Jews in the Herodian period. The problem with doing so is that Dubberstein deals with Babylonia practices not necessarily Jewish practices relative to calculation of leap years.

When considering new moons remember that a Roman day began at midnight (see Plutarch) and a Jewish day at sunset. For example, in 26 CE the New Moon occurred just before midnight Friday on April 5 (Julian Calendar) but on the four Hebrew Calendar variations below it occurred on the Sabbath (Jewish Saturday).
